On 23 December 2014, in
New Orleans, LA, Rick Anderson, a fellow shipmate, and I along with Robert
Wallace presented a Flag to the Nation World War II Museum. This US
Flag was flown on the USS Southerland, DD 743, on September 2, 1945 in Tokyo
Bay when the surrender ceremony took place.
The USS Southerland was one
of the lead ships of the allied naval armada that went into Tokyo Bay. The
Flag was given to us by two of the ship’s Plank Owners (original crew) to be
donated to the Museum for preservation and hopefully displayed. Rick
and I served on the Southerland during the Vietnam War and it was a great honor for us to be able represent our Shipmates and
the USS Southerland.
I highly encourage anyone visiting the New Orleans
area to go and experience the National World War II Museum.
